in person at Living Water Community Center

Are you interested in Ayurveda, but don’t know where to start?

Are you turned off by newbie practitioners using buzzwords like “dosha” and promising to change your life in 2 hours?

Are you a Yoga teacher who is curious about how to incorporate the principles of Ayurveda into your offerings?

Are you a student looking to deepen your understanding and personal practice?

If you answered YES to any or all of these questions then this workshop is for you!

What to Expect

As sister sciences, Yoga and Ayurveda are a natural pairing for the individual who is looking to deepen their understanding of the self and wanting to incorporate meaningful practices into their wellness routine.

Ayurveda (आयुवेद’) is one of the oldest natural healing systems on the planet, with South Asian roots. It is both a preventative and healing medicinal science, which helps each individual move toward a state of total balance.

Together we will explore the foundational and philosophical principles of Ayurveda including how the 5 elements combine to make up your unique paradigm of constitution, an overview of the 3 doshas, and sources of balance and imbalance. In the spirit of community wellness, we will have a vegan potluck before taking a deeper dive into the qualities of food combining and the body wisdom experienced through taste sensation.

Our day will conclude with an intentional yoga and pranayama practice co-led by J and Anjali with an emphasis on the qualities of each practice and how they may effect different individuals with unique constitutions and imbalances. Our goal is always to create balance, and through this practice we hope to offer a few more tools for you to create that balance in your daily life.

Meet your Guides

Anjali Sunita (she/her)

Anjali is the Founder and Director of Baltimore Yoga Village, a community wellness platform which amplifies life-changing and affirming practitioners and programs and Village Life Wellness, her private Ayurvedic practice where she enjoys offering both in-person and virtual nutrition and lifestyle consultations as well as many therapeutic Ayurvedic bodywork services.

Anjali has trained in yoga through the Sivananda Ashrams in India and Canada, as well as multiple training programs in the United States. Anjali received her Ayurvedic certification through the Ayurvedic Institute and continued her studies under her teacher Dr. Vasant Lad in New Mexico and Pune, India. She also completed a panchakarma specialist program with Dr. Kalvaidya of Charak Ayurveda in Jaipur, India. Additionally, she has vocal training in North Indian classical singing, with one of the foremost female sitar musicians in the world, Guruji Hasu Patel.

Anjali has a gift for integrating the knowledge from her beloved teachers and sharing it in a loving way that is accessible, easily to understand, and applicable to each person she encounters. As a biracial woman of Indian descent, she carries particular interest in restoring what is most sacred - the practices and medicines of her family, so many of which have been white-washed and colonized to desolation. She believes that through reconnecting with the traditions, we can collectively heal and transform with the earth’s natural medicine.

J is a Yogi, martial artist, body worker, retired breakdancer, community activist, and the son of a Baptist minister who has been learning and studying eastern arts and philosophy for nearly two decades. But movement itself, and creativity and exploration of movement through dance has always been a constant source of curiosity and confidence. From learning how to headstand at five from his father, to walking on his hands and tumbling as an adolescent, to playing sports as a teen, to poppin’ and lockin’ - J has always been moving!

All of this movement came together for J in the Brazilian art of Capoeira, with its precision and elegance, freedom and beauty. That inexplicably led to Hung Gar kung fu and his first real Teacher, who unknowingly led him to yoga. From books by Muata Ashby, to the teachings of Swami Satchidananda and Integral Yoga, along with Ashtanga, Jivamukti and other prominent systems of yoga, J has crafted a “style” tempered by real life and humor that relies on the importance of breath as a guide and a source of strength. And even as this ancient practice continues to evolve, the mantra continues to be “practice is effort toward steadiness of mind”.

J is also the co-founder of Project Yoga Richmond and has been leading Yoga Teacher Trainings since 2012 and the Mindfulness and Leadership Teacher Training through Maha Vira Yoga since 2019.
